During the first week of my senior project, I have had the opportunity to meet almost the entire staff of the athletic department at CSU and it has been super interesting to learn about all of their roles. During this time of year, all of the different sports seasons are now completed so most of the staff's time is spent having meetings and planning out what the next school year will look like for the athletic department. There are about 12 people working in this office and most of them are in different sections of work. A few are coaches, such as the men's lacrosse coach, men's tennis coach, and men's basketball coach. There are members of the sales, communications, and finance departments that we were able to talk to and understand more about what their jobs entail. Almost everyone in the office is very flexible and they all work on a myriad of projects to benefit the entire department. Our mentor's responsibilities are also very versatile. Over the past few days, we sat in on numerous meetings that plan for the future of their athletics programs. Currently, they are focusing on increasing attendance to sporting events, especially men's basketball games. The department emailed the student body a survey about their attendance at games last month. It was my job to go over this data and compile it into a sheet that highlights the most important information. The survey asked questions about the games people liked to watch, why they didn’t go, how they heard about the games, and what time of the day they would most like to attend. After this, we sat in on a meeting between many people in the office and a few graduate students that created the survey and we all went over the information together so we were able to come up with conclusions on how to increase overall attendance.
Is it interesting to see how data collection and analysis inform real world decisions?
